#000 3" (76 mm) Extremely heavy leather, harnesses, thick saddlery
#1 2.75" (70 mm) Extra-heavy leather, saddlework, large sheaths
#2 2.5" (64 mm) Very heavy leather, tack, belts, armor pieces
#3 2.25" (57 mm) Heavy leather, structured bags, holsters
#5 2" (51 mm) Medium-heavy leather, moccasins, gear
#7 1.75" (45 mm) Medium leather, wearable leatherwork, bead bases
#9 1.5" (38 mm) Light leather, soft hides, garment sewing
#10–12 1.25"–1.375" Thin leather, intricate work, bead embroidery

Tips:

  • Smaller number = larger needle

  • Match the needle size to your leather thickness and thread diameter.

  • Use larger needles for tougher hides and bigger thread; smaller ones for fine work.
